OUTSTANDING SIMONDS BLUE RIBBON No. 371 RIP SAW – BLUE ETCH & Hand Sharpened
Here is one of the finest saws made, a Simonds “Blue Ribbon” saw from the early 1900’s. A 26” rip saw model No. 371 which is a top of the line saw made by Simonds. What is really surprising and stunning about this saw is the intact blue coloring to their reverse etchings. What I mean by reverse etchings is that “THE SIMONDS SAW” stands out and the blue is in the background depression made by the etching. This is rarely seen as this blue coloring was easily lost with minor use. Just lightly cleaning the saw causes the blue to diminish. This saw was made in the early 1920’s thus over 90 years has passed and the blue etch is still intact – that’s rare!
Simonds produced handsaws between 1901 and 1926. Simonds did not make distinctions between cast steel, refined cast steel, London spring steel, extra refined London spring steel, etc., like Disston did, but clearly the more expensive saws, especially the "Blue Ribbon" saws, used a higher quality steel than the cheaper saws.
Simonds was in business during the early 1900’s for a short time yet made saws of the finest quality competing with Disston and Atkins.
This saw is in excellent condition with a perfectly straight saw plate and perfect carved apple wood handle. This saw is a 6ppi rip with a clean factory polished plate that has no rust or pitting.
Every tooth has been gone over and sharpened and set under magnification. It is a spectacular user saw that cuts quickly and smoothly following a straight line with no effort. The perfect saw for use in the workshop or when using a saw horse. It has a comfortable grip for a larger hand but is also a fine saw for the smaller grip. A great user as well as a very collectible saw. There are plenty of fine Disston saws but a Simonds saw like this with the reverse blue etch is rare indeed.

I have collected handsaws for over 25 years and have enjoyed learning the history of this industry. I have always worked with hand tools and was fortunate to teach woodworking for 30 years after my six years in the military. It was during this time that I realized the best way to get quality tools for my students was to recondition vintage tools. Having learned saw sharpening from my Japanese woodworking instructor at the University of Hawaii during the late 1970’s, I was able to cheaply supply my students with vintage quality saws to use in class.
I am not a professional saw doctor but have spent the last 30 years as a shop teacher and had to sharpen all my shop saws and other tools over the years. Those kids knew how to dull a saw and often I had to keep them after school for an hour when I saw them abusing a saw. That way they came to realize what I went thru to get a saw in perfect working order.
This consists of jointing the saw to get it straight, shaping and sharpening, re-jointing and re-sharpening, gently setting the teeth to get a smooth sawing action in the kerf, then final sharpening. Finally I lightly hone the edge with a fine stone and polish the blade- before testing the smoothness of the cut.
