From the dust cover inside flap:
Written by an eminent designer with an international reputation,
    Motorcycle Engineering
sets out, for the first time, all those problems - technical, commercial and aesthetic - upon whose solution the success of any new motorcycle design must depend.  It describes present-day constructional methods, contrasting them with some practices of the past and, avoiding unnecessary discussion of basic theories, clearly shows their practical application in solving the special problems of size, weight and stability inherent in the design of a single-track vehicle.
Every component part of the machine is thoroughly dealt with; ignition, timing, carburation, and steering geometry are discussed, and there are accounts of manufacturing methods and materials.  A notable feature of the book is the large number of illustrations, in both line and half-tone, which clarify the text and depict features of motorcycle design from the earliest days up to the present time.
This is a book for which there has long been a need.  It will be welcomed by all students of motorcycle design and, to quote the distinguished author of the Foreword, "will be read with equal interest by the youngest apprentice and by the "Gaffer" himself", whereven motorcycles and their engines are designed or built.
