Bubinga is a beautiful wood species, but the charm of wood is always more than impressive color. Bubinga’s rich reddish tones are laced with darker annual ring lines that can produce striking flatsawn surfaces, such as for showy panels.
On the other hand, the lines are more subdued and uniform on rift and quartered faces. Riftsawn bubinga thus makes an excellent choice for shaped table legs, for example, where, rather than competing with the designed curves, it gives them importance with its visual and physical weight.
As a world renowned artisan, I was able to form this fine writing instrument through a painstaking process that involved several hours and stages in order to present a finely polished work of art. Each blank was measured and drilled before inserting a brass tube. They were then trued on each end before being placed on my Delta midi-lathe for the shaping using various chisels. When the desired shape was achieved I then took them through a multi-stage sanding process finishing with nine steps of micro-mesh, followed by a three step polishing resulting in a glass like finish.
