Description:
ALS : Autograph Letter Signed
Howe, Julia Ward. Autograph letter signed. Influential women's suffragist, abolitionist, and poet Julia Ward Howe writes a letter with changes to her poem "The Capitol" to Robert U. Johnson, editor of The Century Magazine, where her poem is soon to be published. December 27th, 1909.
IJulia Ward Howe writes in part: "Now will this do-'A Mecca of unfailing faith / A Zion of redeeming breath.' I became aware of this no rhyme, only after the poem had been been sped on its way...If you accept this change, you will leave out the lines ending in 'assault' and 'cope,' and will change the Zion line as suggested. Otherwise, I am afraid that it must be printed with its defect." In very good to fine condition,
Howe first gained renown after writing the lyrics to American patriotic song "Battle Hymn of the Republic," which quickly became one of the most popular songs in the Union during the Civil War. An elegant and engaging writer, Howe was the first woman elected into the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1908. By that time, she had established herself as not only a poet, but as a leading women's suffragist, having founded the women's suffrage movement with Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. She was a staunch abolitionist and advocated prison reform and international peace in essays and lectures. Letter is signed "very sincerely yours, Julia Ward Howe." Near fine condition.
