    The Spanish, having seized Sardinia, were then attacking Sicily. Admiral Sir George Byng was sent to mediate a peace; however the Spanish General, who was besieging Messina, refused. As a result, Byng pursued the Spanish with the action off Cape Passaro, either destroying or capturing the greater proportion of it. Castaneta, the Spanish admiral, was amongst the prisoners.
